Tips for creating location-inspired interiors

Get creative with artwork and don't forget to bring the outside in with skylights.

A bedroom painted royal blue with three skylights that have matching blue shades

Located in Portland, Maine, one of America’s oldest fishing ports, The HGTV Urban Oasis® 2020 draws inspiration from its coastal location through color, artwork and architectural details. In the main bedroom, interior designer Brian Patrick Flynn created a thoroughly immersive nautical design that will have the hardiest landlubber dreaming of seafaring adventures.

Check out three tips for creating a location-driven design.

Be bold with color

Nothing evokes a place like color. In the Southwest, terra cotta speaks to its deserts and canyons, while deep green evokes the evergreen forest of the Pacific Northwest. For America’s northernmost coastal state, Flynn embraced the ocean with a vibrant blue on all four walls of the main bedroom. And he adds to the effect with room-darkening skylight blinds of nearly the same color, a blue comforter and window shades in light blue striped fabric.

Add sky views with skylights

Paint wasn’t the only material used to add blue to the ceiling. Three VELUX No Leak Solar Powered “Fresh Air” skylights open up the space and bring in all shades of blue, depending on the time of day. Whether it's watching a passing storm, seeing the sky brighten in the morning or stargazing at night, the skylights connect the room to Mother Nature’s celestial wonders.

Additionally, the skylights bring in ample natural light from above to showcase the vibrant blue hue on the walls. And, they open to create air flow. What better way to capture the scent of the ocean?

Artwork outside the box

Flynn draped one wall with naval signal flags, completing the nautical theme and adding a pop of red to the otherwise tonal blue room. The flags are among the many vintage pieces found throughout the house, including the mismatched dresser and table used as bedside tables in the main bedroom.
