Natural Light

Mixing modern and rustic for bold maritime-inspired entryway

Make the most of your mud room with artwork and natural light.

Grey house with a colorful porch

The designer of The HGTV Urban Oasis® 2020 transformed a charming old home in Portland, Maine, into a bold, bright getaway that seamlessly marries vintage flea market pieces with modern design. The renovation included an addition on the side of the home to use as the everyday entryway, mudroom and laundry room.

The pre-renovation home can be seen below.

Directly between the driveway and living space, this entryway and mudroom offers a convenient place to transition clothes and shoes between the rugged Maine terrain and weather and the cozy living area in the home. Distinct from the more formal front entryway where the homeowner may receive guests, the side entry provides a daily use portal with convenient access to the laundry room and powder room separate from the dining, kitchen and living room.

The side entry features linen mesh grass cloth wallpaper with bands of pinks, oranges and blues that evoke a coastal Maine sunset. Large windows and VELUX Solar Powered “Fresh Air” skylights let natural light and fresh air flood in, enhancing the connection to the outdoors and lending extra light to the laundry room. In addition to functional benefits, the skylights add a unique architectural detail that lends itself perfectly to the overall blended modern and vintage style.

Solar powered light-filtering skylight blinds in Burnt Orange echo the sunset effect of the wallpaper, while providing an option to diffuse the sunlight when needed.

Designer Brian Patrick Flynn incorporated personal touches, such as a rustic second-hand bench, original artworks and plants that warm up the space and balance the cool industrial feel from the ample glass windows, wire staircase and high-gloss painted floors. Flynn combines framed abstract art with commissioned pieces of sailors, with each unique and colorful piece benefitting from the range of colors visible only in natural light.

With the additional square footage, Flynn created space for a galley-style laundry room that separates chores from leisure or work time in the neighboring living and dining rooms. Solid white shelves lined with wicker baskets offer a charming traditional twist to stay organized.

The laundry room leads directly into a powder room (or half bath) that takes its inspiration from Portland’s sailing and fishing culture with fun nautical décor such as sailboat themed wallpaper and a porthole-shaped mirror. To bring further cohesion between the modern and rustic style seen throughout the home, Flynn incorporated a sleek cylindrical light over a vintage farmhouse-style sink with exposed plumbing.

Another VELUX Solar Powered “Fresh Air” Skylight enhances the dark blue décor, with natural light preventing the details from getting lost in the shadows. Room-darkening solar powered skylight blinds in Charcoal perfectly complement the farmhouse sink and hardware.
