How skylights make the most of cathedral ceilings in the HGTV Urban Oasis® 2021

Come along on a tour of the home to see how skylights take cathedral and vaulted ceilings to a whole new level.

Cathedral ceilings harken back to their namesake by creating grand, elevated enclosures designed to draw the eye up toward the sky. In the HGTV Urban Oasis® 2021, the builder made the most of the cathedral ceilings added during the renovation of the cottage-style home by incorporating skylights. So, the payoff of gazing skyward is an actual sky view, plus abundant natural light.

Located in the Broad Ripple Village neighborhood of Indianapolis, this year’s HGTV Urban Oasis® was a full renovation in the truest sense. The original home had low, flat ceilings and felt, in the words of interior designer Brian Patrick Flynn, “really dark and cramped.” To compensate for its small size, the project builder, Bespoke Construction, added a dormer to the front of the home to allow for cathedral ceilings spanning the width of the home from the front entry through the kitchen to the back door.

The builder also raised ceilings in the main bedroom, main bathroom and living room to match the roof pitch. This added height to these rooms, but cathedral ceilings alone couldn’t do the trick. The addition of skylights completes the expansive aesthetic by providing a sky view, all-day natural light and fresh air flow.

Join us on a quick tour of the HGTV Urban Oasis® 2021 to see how skylights help homeowners make the most of cathedral ceilings. And if you find yourself inspired, find a skylight installer in your area to see how skylights can transform any room in your home.

Kitchen and dining room take the meaning of open plan to new heights

As soon as you step through the front door of this year’s HGTV Urban Oasis®, your view expands. The dining room and kitchen are connected under a cathedral ceiling that serves as the room’s architectural centerpiece. The walls, ceiling, trim and doors are all painted blush pink and natural light from skylights with shades floods the room with natural light, bringing out the rosy undertones found in the wood and copper accents.

Not only do the skylights highlight the architectural detailing of the cathedral ceiling, but they also open to release warm air that rises to the ceiling’s soaring height.

A living room oriented to the sun

The builder of the HGTV Urban Oasis® 2021 again raised the ceiling to create the illusion of a larger space in the living room. Before the renovation, this room had a flat ceiling and felt closed in. See how it appeared before the renovation in the photo below.

Living room before renovation

With six skylights arranged three apiece on either side of the roof peak, the new cathedral ceiling in the living room draws your gaze to the sky. All of that natural light amplifies the mustard yellow walls. Oversized floral paintings on either side of the white brick fireplace appear ready to grow out of their frames and toward the light. And with light-filtering skylight shades, controlled with a remote or via a smartphone app, light control is as easy as a click of a button.

The main bathroom maximizes use of a small space

Installed high up in a vaulted ceiling, the skylight with shades in the main bathroom is the only source of natural light in the room. White walls and floor amplify the effect of the sunlight from above while forgoing a vertical window opens up an opportunity for a gallery wall.

And because the bathroom skylight opens with a remote control or smartphone app, keeping the space fresh is simple.

Main bedroom connects to the outdoors

Right next door in the main bedroom two skylights with shades in the vaulted ceiling ensure natural light reaches further into the space, while also creating a connection to the outdoors. Don’t worry about getting a good night's sleep with skylights in a bedroom. Adding either light-filtering or room-darkening shades allows you to adjust the light to suit your needs.
