4 ways to up your gallery wall game

Natural light from above, cohesive colors and personal touches can take your gallery wall from average to amazing.

Gallery walls are a great way to showcase your personal style. Whether you want to display your budding art collection or your child’s latest masterpiece, these four tips can help you get started.

1. Incorporate natural light from above

When it comes to your gallery wall, light quality is crucial. Natural, diffuse light creates the ideal atmosphere for displaying your favorite art, but don’t just take our word for it. Museums and art galleries rely on natural light from above because it reveals colors more accurately than artificial light or harsh, angled light from windows.

HGTV® designer Brian Patrick Flynn’s Atlanta home (above) utilizes VELUX® skylights for this reason, resulting in a calming, evenly lit space perfect for viewing his bold gallery wall.

2. Think thematically

When creating a gallery wall, thinking thematically can give you a great jumping-off point. It could be anything that is interesting or meaningful to you — a style of art (modern, pop or abstract), a favorite hobby (think music or movies), or special family items, such as kids’ photos and artwork.

3. Choose a color palette

You may be tempted to fill up a wall with whatever you have on hand, but thoughtfully selecting art within a specific color palette can make a big difference. Whether it’s calming neutrals, bright neons, or black and white, sticking to a color scheme can give your gallery wall a polished, cohesive look.

This gallery wall in Paper & Stitch’s Brittni Mehlhoff’s dining room (above) uses black, white and shades of pink to complement the room’s muted cranberry and caramel tones.

Or consider the gallery wall below, laid out to mimic nearby steps. A black and white color scheme gives it a classic look while blending family photos with geometric art. A VELUX Sun Tunnel® Skylight fills the stairwell and landing with natural light.

4. Mix objects and art

Your gallery wall doesn’t have to be limited to prints or paintings — other memorabilia can add flare and visual interest, not to mention dimensionality.

This gallery wall in the HGTV Urban Oasis® 2022 in Nashville, designed by Flynn, echoes the spirit of the city, incorporating guitars and a hat among the art. And because it’s in a stairwell, you get to experience the art and objects from different vantage points for a unique journey every time you go upstairs or downstairs.
