When people walk into the media room of the Coastal Living show home, they will notice the cool Coronado Beach breezes wafting through the space, thanks to two VELUX No Leak Solar Powered “Fresh Air” Skylights.
Architect Dorian Lytle, who heads the design/build division of Flagg Homes, integrated skylights into the design because they provide fresh air to the home’s leeward side. Their placement at the top of the family room’s ceiling assures that wind flowing over the roofline will pull air from the interior of the home’s windward side into the family room and out through the skylight.
“If you have the opportunity to strategically place skylights in your home it will make a world of difference, especially with these skylights that can be placed anywhere and are operable without having to have the wiring,” Lytle said. “It’s a terrific way to bring natural light and ventilation into a home.”
The skylights add natural light, but when it comes time for family movie time, just close the blackout blinds to darken the room.
“The skylights are great in this room because we never really need to turn the air conditioning on because we can open the skylights and let the fresh air in,” said Max Humphrey, an interior designer with Burnham Design who collaborated on the interior design of the house.
“It’s a whole flow from outdoors to in and it feels completely natural and fresh all of the time,” said Betsy Burnham, principal of Burnham Design.
The show home also includes a VELUX SUN TUNNEL skylight in the upstairs bathroom.
