Brian Patrick Flynn, the designer of the HGTV Urban Oasis® 2021, gave new life to a cozy one-story cottage in Indianapolis, Indiana. The living room includes a marriage of bold colors, statement furniture pieces and VELUX Solar Powered Skylights to create a relaxing but striking space.
A modern approach
When it came to designing the living room, the color palette was intentional. Flynn wanted to maintain the home’s Midwestern charm by creating a relaxing oasis that could be enjoyed for downtime or visiting with friends and family. Mustard walls, complemented by soft terracotta sofas, set the tone for the living room’s bold style. The brick fireplace, which was original to the home, was painted a crisp white to provide both vibrance and contrast to the warm color palette that envelopes the space.
Botanical pairings
Commissioned floral and botanical paintings by artist Colleen O’Connor rest above the room’s built-in seating area on the fireplace wall. The soft pink enhances the ambiance of the space while the green foliage depicted in the paintings complements the living room’s warm tones.
Bringing the outside in
The double bank of six Solar-Powered Fresh-Air Skylights with shades offers the living room plenty of natural light. They function as a sharp juxtaposition to the warm colors used throughout the space while providing fresh air, depth and dimension. Along with creating beautiful design harmony, with ample airflow, the skylights make the small space feel more open.

Raising the bar
Above the seating area, an oversized Capiz Shell pendant — made of pearlescent shell panes cut from an individual natural shell — cascades from the living room’s ceiling in a slender metal grid pattern. Adding a touch of elegance, the light feature illuminates the space with a gentle glow and heightens the living room’s bold, modern style.
Patterns with impact
A nod to the home’s ‘80s-inspired theme, the area rug, made from a durable wool-cotton blend, boasts a multicolored palette with a rectangular pattern and offsetting stripes. The thick texture and bright colors add dimension and a retro twist to the room.
But this wasn’t the end of Flynn's play with patterns. He also incorporated a striped ottoman — which doubles as a coffee table and counterpart to the sketched patterned throw pillows — that sits on top of the rug. Further offsetting the room’s rich colors, the designer dressed the windows with custom-woven gold-on-flax drapery.
