Stairwell skylights bring natural light to the core of the home

It's an unexpected, but highly effective skylight location.

Stairwells are notoriously dark because they’re often located in the center of the home. Adding skylights over the stairwell not only brightens up the stairs, but it also spills natural light into rooms next to the stairs.

That’s why Mark Horan, owner and president of Horan Building Company, placed a skylight over the second-floor landing of the three-story Coastal Living Idea Home in Middletown, Rhode Island.

In addition to filling the stairwell with natural light, the VELUX No Leak Solar Powered “Fresh Air” Skylight also opens to allow for whole-home airing. Hot air rises and escapes through the skylight, while cooler, fresh air is pulled in through windows below.

The skylight also includes a navy-blue, light-blocking blind, which provides a color accent on the ceiling to complement blue hues found throughout the home.
